Art and Design

Intent
At Bellfield, we believe every child is an artist with a unique voice. Our curriculum nurtures creativity, confidence, and self-expression through a wide range of materials and techniques. Children learn about inspiring artists while developing practical skills and the ability to reflect and refine their work. Wherever possible, we enrich learning through gallery visits, workshops, and cross-curricular projects, connecting art to the wider world. We are committed to inclusion, ensuring pupils with SEND receive tailored support so they can fully participate and succeed.
Implementation
In EYFS, children explore colour, texture, and form through play-based experiences, progressing from simple mark-making to more detailed work such as self-portraits and clay modelling. Across Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils build skills in painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, and textiles. Each unit follows a clear sequence: exploring ideas, learning techniques, and creating original pieces. Lessons are adapted to meet individual needs, using visual prompts, practical resources, and additional support for SEND learners. Enrichment opportunities, including trips and workshops, make learning exciting and memorable.
Impact
Our pupils leave Bellfield as confident, imaginative creators who take pride in their work and understand the value of reflection and improvement. Artwork is celebrated across the school and shared with families, fostering pride and community. Regular assessment ensures progress for all, including those with SEND, and helps us plan next steps. Most importantly, children develop a lifelong appreciation for art and the confidence to express themselves creatively.
