Computing

Intent

At Bellfield, we want every child to feel confident and capable in today’s digital world. Our aim is to help pupils become creators of technology, not just consumers, by giving them the knowledge and skills to understand how technology works and how it shapes our lives. Through a carefully designed computing curriculum, built on the principles of the National Centre for Computing Education, children learn to think logically, solve problems, and use technology responsibly. We place a strong emphasis on online safety, ensuring pupils know how to protect themselves and others while exploring the exciting opportunities technology offers. For pupils with SEND, learning is adapted and supported so that every child can access and succeed in computing.

Implementation

Computing is taught in line with the National Curriculum and supported by guidance from the NCCE. In EYFS, children begin exploring technology through play and simple devices, developing early skills and vocabulary. As they progress through school, pupils build knowledge in computer science, including programming, understanding systems, and the principles of information and computation. They also learn to create digital content and use technology for real purposes. Online safety and digital ethics are woven into every stage, helping children make informed choices and behave responsibly online. Lessons combine practical, hands-on experiences with purposeful projects, and for SEND learners, we provide tailored resources, visual supports, and additional adult guidance to ensure full participation.

Impact

By the time pupils leave Bellfield, they will be digitally literate and confident in using technology safely and effectively. They will have developed problem-solving skills through computational thinking and learned to persevere when tackling challenges. Most importantly, they will understand the role technology plays in society and feel inspired by the possibilities it offers for their future. Our curriculum ensures all children—including those with SEND—are prepared for an ever-changing digital world, equipped with the knowledge, creativity, and resilience to thrive.
